Three Local Institutions, One World-Class School

A Collaborative Partnership Between World-Class Institutions

Founded in 2007 by Jim Balsillie, The Balsillie School of International Affairs is a collaborative partnership among Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) and the University of Waterloo (UW) - two of Canada’s premier universities - and The Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI), a public policy think tank that address international governance challenges.

The School represents the largest initiative in the social sciences in Canadian history. There are over 60 affiliated faculty teaching in the three programs currently associated with the School, the Ph.D. in Global Governance (joint UW/WLU), the Master's in Global Governance (UW) and the Master's in International Public Policy (WLU), and over 50 graduate students at UW and Laurier currently hold CIGI Junior fellowships.

"The Waterloo area... has a lot to offer to a deeper understanding of the many areas that impact global governance and international affairs."

-Jim Balsillie, CIGI Founder and Board Chair
