The African Union and Regional Governance Innovation
A Brown Bag Lunch featuring the research of Thomas Kwasi Tieku (Lead Researcher, Africa Initiative, CIGI). All are welcome. Bring your own lunch.
Thomas entered the field of international relations due to his interest in pan-African ideals and his belief that reform is needed in outdated, post-colonial global governance structures. He developed his expertise in international negotiation, global governance, and continental African politics through a research focus on international mediation, international institutions, global governance, foreign policy analysis, conflict resolution, and Africa’s multilateral institutions. This work led Thomas to be cross-appointed to the Munk School of Global Affairs and New College at the University of Toronto. He directed the African studies program at the university between 2006 and 2011. Thomas has consulted for international organizations such as the World Bank Group and the African Union and also governments. Some of his recent work has been published in Democratization, African Security Review and Canadian Foreign Policy Journal. Thomas is an editor of the African Journal of Political Science and International Relations.
At CIGI, Thomas is the lead researcher for the Africa Initiative, where he is responsible for overseeing the program’s research activities, organizing grant competitions and monitoring recipients’ contractual obligations. He is also the series editor for the Africa Initiative’s discussion paper series, a set of academic peer-reviewed articles based on field research in Africa.
