Short Bio

Randall Wigle is Professor of Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo Ontario, Canada. He has published widely on topics in the areas of international trade policy and environmental economics. The verwhelming majority of this work relates to computable general equilibrium modeling. This modeling simulates the world economy's response to trade and environmental policies.

An important theme in this work is the analysis of environmental and trade policy in an international context. Professor Wigle is currently studying Canadian compliance with the Kyoto Protocol. A research project focusing on the federal--provincial policy dimensions of Kyoto compliance was recently funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Tracy Snoddon is Professor Wigle's co-investigator on the project.

Recently he has studied the nature of `environmental' provisions of trade agreements; linking of international trade and environmental negotiations; and the Uruguay Round trade negotiations. An ongoing branch of his work involves the evaluation of alternative instruments to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

Professor Wigle has been involved in the preparation of technical reports for Agriculture Canada, the C. D. Howe Institute, Industry Canada, the US Department of Labor and Australia's Productivity (formerly Industry) Commission among others. He recently completed a report on cost issues of Kyoto Compliance for Industry Canada.
