PolicyNet Virtual Seminars

In an effort to strengthen existing networks and foster new relationships between member schools, six PolicyNet universities and CIGI have come together to create the Virtual Seminar Series.

The goal is to bring a global perspective to policy studies by connecting students from around the world with distinguished faculty members residing at PolicyNet schools around the world, and to encourage international dialogue and debate between these students and faculty.

Students prepare for the seminars by reading several relevant articles from a list provided by the speaker and, following a short talk, participate in a discussion between themselves and the presenter.

Policy Net Virtual Seminars

The inaugural lecture in the series took place in the spring of 2008, and was delivered by Dr. Anne-Marie Slaughter, Dean of the Woodrow Wilson School of International Affairs and Public Policy.  In October 2008, the Balsillie School hosted the second lecture in the series, which was delivered by Dr. Thomas Homer-Dixon, the CIGI Chair of Global Systems.

The participating schools are: The Balsillie School of International Affairs (Canada); Crawford School of Economics and Government, Australian National University (Australia); School of Government, Peking University (China); School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University (China); and The Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton (US).

The Informal Seminar Series

The Informal Seminar Series is part of the Balsillie School Ph.D. in Global Governance doctoral seminar.

Running four times a year and drawing on faculty members associated with the Balsillie School, the series is geared towards exposing Ph.D. students to the challenging art of making paper presentations in a professional setting as they will likely find at professional association meetings (e.g. 15-20 minutes of speaking based on a regular article-length paper.) The ISS is also the forum through which doctoral students in their second year also present their dissertation proposals to their peers.

While the seminar is required for all first year Ph.D. students as part of the doctoral seminar, all Ph.D. students in the Balsillie School are invited to attend.
