Alana Westervelt graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Environmental Studies in Honours International Development. During her undergraduate degree, she completed an eight month placement in Tanzania working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism on community-based tourism development throughout the country.
Upon graduation, Alana worked for a not-for-profit in Waterloo Region, specializing in refugee resettlement. This allowed her to pursue her interests in refugee and migration policy on both a national and an international scale. While at Balsillie School of International Affairs, she hopes to develop her understanding of human security, specifically regarding global migration policies and their intersection with human rights.
