Heather provides research and administrative support for the Laurier Centre for Sustainable Food Systems and the UNESCO Chair on Food, Biodiversity and Sustainability Studies. Through her work, she builds capacity for the researchers, students, and partners affiliated with the Centre and Chair and broadcasts and amplifies their research.

With more than a decade of experience in the agri-food sector, Heather’s winding career path is rooted in her time as assistant manager with the St. John’s Farmers’ Market. There she learned about local food as a site of community and reciprocity while also grappling with tensions around equitable food access and sustainable producer livelihoods. Since then she’s backpacked across Canada, which led to a stint managing a small organic farm in Ontario, supported the management and establishment of several community gardens in Newfoundland, become an advocate for farmland protection and good land use planning, and reflected on and written about agriculture-related topics ranging from on-farm best management practices to carbon pricing. She earned an M.A. from the University of Guelph, during which she explored the “Representations and Realities of Agritourism in Essex County, Ontario,” and a B.Sc. in Geography from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Heather also currently serves as a steering committee member for Guelph’s 2Rivers Festival, which showcases and celebrates the Speed and Eramosa Rivers through a series of community-led events throughout May and June. In her spare time, she loves cycling, eating and making good food, and gardening.
