Dr. Zhenzhong Si is the Project Manager of the MiFOOD Project that examines the interactions between migration and food security in the Global South. He holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Waterloo. Through the Hungry Cities Partnership, Zhenzhong investigates the dynamics of urban food systems in Nanjing, China with a particular focus on the role of wet markets in urban food security and its interactions with modern food outlets, household food security status and policies for food provisioning. Zhenzhong also works on the SSHRC Partnership Development Grant project that studies agroecology’s potential for achieving the SDGs, and the SSHRC-funded project about COVID-19’s impacts on food security in China. His doctoral research examined the recent development of ecological agriculture and alternative food networks in China. It focused on the dynamic relationship between the state and civil society actors that shapes the sustainability transition of China’s food system. He published papers in development and agrifood themed journals and co-authored the book Organic Food and Farming in China: Top-down and Bottom-up Ecological Initiatives. Zhenzhong also co-edited a special journal issue (“China’s Changing Food System”) in Canadian Journal of Development Studies and a special issue (“Urban Food Deserts: Perspectives from the Global South”) in Sustainability.
